What Is The Amazon Affiliate Program?
The Amazon Affiliate Program also know as Amazon Associates is their program where you get money for referring people to their website; or more specifically, a specific product.
When you sign up, you will be given your unique affiliate link that is used to track all your sales.
The program is very popular among elite marketers and it is used by CNN and The New York Times, but there are also many super affiliates who leverage other affiliate netwrks and private afffiliate programs as well.
How Does It Work?
When your website visitors click on your affiliate link on your website or on your Youtube channel, it takes them to Amazon where you will make money for anything that they buy for the next 24 hours.
But before you get started in affiliate marketing, I want to tell you some of the drawbacks.
In this article, I will be revealing what I love and loathe about the Amazon affiliate program.
What I Love About The Amazon Affiliate Program:
-Amazon is one of the greatest e-commerce companies in the world and they make about $239 billion per year. They’re responsible for almost half of all the sales in the United States and get 206.1 million visitors per month surfing their website- Statista.com
-They have been around since 1994.
-There are thousands of marketers making money with it.
-It’s free and simple to join. They don’t require that you have a website where other affiliate networks require this along with consistent visitors to your blog. While it is possible to get started promoting Amazon’s products just from making amazing product reviews on YouTube, it’s still important that you have a beautiful website with your own brand so you create a more sustainable business. Once you have your site, you can make videos on YouTube and direct people to your website from there.
-Some product categories like luxury beauty and furniture pay 8 to 10 percent commissions, which is great for physical products.
-It’s an awesome way to make money from your website because they sell millions of products, many that are unique or hard to find in a brick and mortar store.
Well, that was unexpected. I never though a groin hair trimmer would be a best seller on Amazon, lol.
-You can receive commissions on everything that your customers put on their carts, not just the product that you recommended. This is awesome and what makes many affiliates obsess over the Amazon affiliate program.
-They already have millions of customers in their customer base, so it’s very convenient for people to buy from a trustworthy company like Amazon as opposed to buying from a company they have never heard of.
-Often times, people prefer buying from there because of Amazon Prime’s free 2-day shipping.
-Amazon is the master of conversions and product upsells.
Ever noticed when you’re about to checkout, they show you, “Frequently bought together…” and they display other similar items? Then the customer thinks, I need that too. By recommending relevant products, Amazon creates a positive user experience.
For example, over 35% of Amazon.com’s revenue is from it’s AI-powered recommendation engine.
Linking and mobile popover ads are also provided.
Here are some drawbacks to using the Amazon Affiliate Program:
-They have been known to lower their already measly commissions.- TheVerge.com
-The average commission per sale is 5%. So if you want to use their affiliate program, you don’t want to end up creating a website based on a topic where the products have crappy commissions.
-Their affiliate program have been cancelled in some states.
-Amazon is heartless and will ban your account even if you do a few little mistakes to break their complicated Terms of Service even if you’re an experienced marketer. They also change often so you always need to understand what you can’t do as their affiliate.
-Their affiliate cookie is only good for one day which can hurt your earnings. Just keep in mind that people don’t usually purchase high ticket items right away and as an affiliate marketer, you will work hard at making a credible website, creating helpful content, and sending people to their site.
Jet, Walmart, and Target’s affiliate cookie lasts for 3 to 7 days.
An awesome thing though is that the cookie will last for 90 days for the products that the person that you send to their website add to their cart within the first 24 hours.
-They can stop selling the product that you’re promoting or your product is no longer popular.
-You need to make at least three sales in the first 180 days after you apply or they will suspend your account. That’s why it’s good to apply for their program once you have a decent audience to promote your products to.

The Bottom Line
The Amazon affiliate program is very lucrative and you should definately piggybank of their success, but you should also add some other affiliate programs.
There are many awesome affilaite networks and private affiliate programs that are worth checking out like ShareASale, Commission Junction, and ClickBank.
No matter what you’re promoting, make sure that it’s a product that you know will truly benefit and help people. If you have bought the product yourself, it will make your review much more effective.
